Mainstream public awareness of this "Montauk" mystery seems to have really begun in 1992 when Preston Nichols and Peter Moon wrote a book called "The Montauk Project - "Experiments in Time". Since then many researchers, fanatics, serious scientists, journalists, Long Island residents and conspiracy theorists have dug away at the claims made and this story is the result. We’ve done our best to connect up the pieces and present a “big picture” in an objective way.
Long Island has always been New York's party-playground but it has also been the location of many very "strange" and important military bases and scientific research facilities. Some are still there and remain operational.
"A picture circulating on the Internet of the alleged Montauk Monster"
(A remarkably "professional" picture given that it was taken in a hurry by a teenage girl with her friends camera.) It's about the size of a cat.
OUTRAGEOUS HOAX OR PROFESSIONAL COVER UP? If ever there was a mystery that has everything from UFOs to USA Government Mind Control experiments then this Montauk event has it. In fact, it seems as if this mystery has everything that any paranoid conspiracy theorist could ever wish for. Weird Experiments, Missing Nazi Gold, Time Travel, Corporate Neo-Orders, Nazi Scientists, Invisibility, Secret Weapons, Abductions, Men in Black, Biogenetics, Secret Animal Research, Wormholes, Black holes, Displaced Native Indians, Inter-dimensional Portals, The Mafia, Bolivian Drug Cartels, Secret Agents and even an Alien or Mutant Monster (photographs available). This bizarre mystery has it all! Books have been written about it, people have allegedly been sent to jail just for investigating it and regardless of the huge interest it is generating on the Internet – mainstream media won’t touch it. And ... who could blame them? But is there really something to this story? Before you dismiss this mystery as the hallucinations of the lunatic fringe or the maligned efforts of marketing people, just remember that one of the best ways to hide something is to “muddy-the-waters” by adding so much nonsense to a subject that people simply don’t know what to believe and what to discard – and so to save time and effort they discard everything! This is a genuine misinformation tactic sometimes referred to as the “Wood-for-the-Trees” or “Subject Assassination” method. “Just because you’re paranoid doesn't mean they’re not out to get you!” Kurt Cobain - American Musician – Nirvana - 1967-1994. The circumstances of Mr. Corbain’s apparent suicide are still a matter of debate. Before we go any further please note that Aquiziam is not trying to solve this mystery (no more letters please unless you have seriously hard evidence) – we merely wish to represent it in an objective way. That’s the purpose of the website. As always ... we encourage our readers to be sceptical, to do their own research and to make up their own minds. “The last civil liberty that people should be prepared to lose is the right to think for themselves. Sadly, because of contentment and laziness, it is often the first that they give away.” Paul Vincent, British Author (1964 - ) THE MYSTERY Given that the modern (Western) history of Long Island (and Montauk), USA, starts as early as 1524 and that it has experienced many changes in culture and occupation, it is not surprising that it has a rich record of dark and sometimes inexplicable incidents. We may list more of these later in another section. There are three main parts to this 60 year Montauk Mystery that may or may not be interlinked.
The area of Montauk is located at the tip of the south fork of Long Island which, in turn, forms part of the Eastern Seaboard of the USA and is the dominant offshore landmass that stretches from New York towards the Cape Cod Peninsular. If there was ever a place perfectly suited for secret activity then this is it. Heavily wooded in places, surrounded by water on three sides, pock-marked by marshes, isolated and easily secured, Long Island and the Montauk District in particular is just the sort of place we would choose. (50 years ago) Over the years Long Island and other smaller islands near it have been, and still are, home to specialist research organisations. Only a picture can prove what we mean. Also ... let ’s not forget the famous, but much contested, demonic visitation film the “Amityville Horror” (Amityville, Long Island) supposedly based on a true story and Peter Benchley’s book and film “Jaws”, another monster, set on imaginarily East Coast island - Amity and actually filmed on Martha’s Vineyard an Island north east of Montauk. Is it just us or is there a pattern developing here? (Actually, it is all probably just coincidence.) In summary this is the legend Although the American Government had been aware of the growing threat that Nazi Germany posed to Europe, the leadership was still unconvinced that this potential conflict posed a risk to the USA. America believed in a policy of isolationism. In 1939 when Germany invaded Poland and then other parts of Europe, thus triggering the start of the Second World War (WWII), the US Government discovered that it was ill prepared for a major international conflict and initially opted for neutrality - although it was prepared to support Britain with resources and equipment. (The Lend-Lease Plan) Psychologically the American populace were not motivated to take part. The American war machine was substantial in size but its leaders had quickly realised, with something of a shock, that it had fallen well behind in military technology. Rumours and reports of advanced German secret weapons combined with Adolph Hitler’s alliance with Bolshevik Russia caused real concern in America circles-of-power. Steps were immediately taken to “improve” America’s technological fighting ability. Existing weapons development programmes were boosted and many new ones were initiated. Every possible aggressive and defensive military technology was investigated - including the science of camouflage.
Research apparently began immediately into various forms of camouflage including light refraction and electronic cloaking. A little over a year after the Pearl Harbour raid a particular team of scientists were ready to test their invention. It is alleged that during October 1943 the US Government undertook a series of experiments to try and make a destroyer escort warship, the USS Eldridge, invisible using various forms of electromagnetic fields and equipment. This was the Philadelphia Experiment or “Project Rainbow”. If this really took place then this would mark the start of the American Stealth Technology Programme. (It is worth noting that the records do reveal that at this time the use of magnetic field generation in ships was being tested as a protection against German magnetic sea mines. This is known as "Degaussing") According to researchers into this mystery, the experiment eventually worked but with disastrous results for the human beings involved. The internet has many reports, often repeating each other and often based on dubious sources, claiming that the ship was rendered “invisible” but was a physical and psychological disaster for those people onboard the vessel. Some sources even claim that the experiment may have temporarily created an inter-dimensional porthole that fused human flesh with the metal structure of the ship. Even more bizarre reports claim that it allowed the first contact with interstellar aliens. (Hmm... this sounds to us like someone muddying-the-waters.) It seems that the experiment so disturbed the scientists involved that it was not repeated. It would appear that after this debacle the programme was cancelled. There has been much more written about the Philadelphia Experiment than we have recorded here and it has even been featured in both books and films. However, it is worth noting that most authorities believe, and claim, that it never took place or was a deliberate hoax designed to mislead the enemies of the USA. Many researchers also now believe that it was an exaggeration of an experiment into the use of electromagnetic fields known as “Degaussing” (invented by Cmdr. Charles F. Goodeve, RCNVR) that was being tested in various British and US Ships. “The effect was to render the vessel magnetically “invisible” to German mines.” It’s easy to see how a misunderstanding could have happened. However, if the experiment really did occur then it is wholly understandable that those involved would have been both physically and mentally injured by the event.
As most people know, Germany (The Third Reich) was defeated. Another secret project that did turn out to be real and was code named “Manhattan” did develop atomic weapons and some months after the fall of Adolph Hitler the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were obliterated by nuclear bombs. World War Two had been ended with a remarkable, and possibly unnecessary, display of power by the USA. However, as one enemy was defeated another appeared in the form of the USSR (The United Soviet Socialist Republic). This is just an observation but it does appear that the US has, since its inception, always had an enemy or threat that it could rally its people against.
The story continues that after the war and between 1952 and 1953 the original scientists involved in the Philadelphia Experiment met and agreed to try and continue their work but this time with the intention of using the effects of M-ESS (Magnetostatic - Electromagnetic Shielding System) as a potential psychological weapon. To this effect they apparently petitioned the US Congress who rejected their appeals on the grounds that the research was simply too dangerous. Disappointed but determined, the researchers resubmitted their proposal directly to the US Department of Defence and promised the development of a new and powerful weapon that could create severe mental disorders at the flick-of-a-switch. Given that in 1954 the moratorium against nuclear testing had not been enacted and to the Americans it appeared as if the USSR was overtaking them in the nuclear arms race, it is not surprising that the Department of Defence may have approved the scheme. Project “Phoenix” (meaning: Reborn from the Ashes) was given the go-ahead. The problem was how to fund it without Congress knowing. This, we admit, is where the story becomes even more bizarre. Apparently, the Department of Defence had secret funds at its disposal generated from the recovery of a hoard of NAZI gold from a train that was blown up in a tunnel in France near the Swiss border. If this was indeed the case then no “objective” record of this discovery has ever made it onto the internet other than the one related to this story. Whatever the real source of the funding this “Black Operation” apparently went ahead and an initial research group was set up at the Brookhaven National Laboratory in 1954. This is the same year the Plum Island Animal Disease Centre was established very near to Fort Terry that was re-established as a U.S. Army Chemical Corps facility in April 1952. According to various sources, the Fort Terry facility was focused on the development of biological agents that could be used against the agriculture and livestock of enemy countries. It was also in 1952 that Camp Hero, the military facility at Montauk Point, was handed over to the 26th Air Division to be operated as an Air Defence Direction Centre. Significant radar installations were established at the base. So ... before we continue with the mystery let’s point out that the US now had four key facilities representing Nuclear, Biological and Radar all located very near to each other. This may or may not have been intentional. Now back to the Philadelphia Experiment (Montauk Project) and “Researchers” located at Brookhaven. It appears that their preliminary work was seriously hampered by financing issues, peer scepticism and a lack of results that suggested that the project might not be worth the effort. It seems that serious support for the project only started in December 1957 as a result of US concerns relating to the successful launch of the USSR Sputnik space probe in October 1957.
Understandably, information and records from this period start to become vague. After weeks of sifting through a range of sometimes clearly nonsensical claims it appears that the researchers were initially less than successful in their attempts to recreate the Philadelphia Experiment Phenomenon. It seems that they could recreate a short range “bloom effect” but any attempts to direct the EMR (Electro Magnetic Radiation) failed. Size did matter after all and now it was apparent that success depended on the dimensions of the radar unit (array) that was used. Suddenly in 1958 a “new” Semi Automatic Ground Environment (SAGE) radar system was installed at Camp Hero. (MAFB) The equipment included a huge AN/FPS-35 radar antenna. The reflector was 126 feet (38 m) long and 38 feet (12 m) tall and weighed about 40 tons. It was supposedly only the second ever built. It also used "frequency diversity" technology making it resistant to electronic countermeasures. (This unit is still visible today) We want to be clear that some of the stuff we read and reviewed is genuinely frightening. This is not because of the claims made (which are outrageous and we refuse to repeat) but by the degree of professionalism put into creating this material. For example we discovered several websites that offered questions and answers into this mystery. Graphically they appeared as if they had been created by a drunken teenager but the language used was excellent. Trust us when we say that even the top international advertising agencies have a problem achieving this level of language accuracy. We can’t either and we are professionals in this field! Someone has spent serious money getting it “right” and yet appearing to have created these web pages in a casual way. Why? Still, on with the story! The team seems to have split into two groups. The first went to Camp Hero and supervised the addition of their new facility to the underground base that was already being constructed. This is where the mystery expands and becomes increasingly unpleasant. According to the writings of individuals that begin to display the symptoms of advanced paranoia and obsessive introspection, the project ran out of money in 1959. No more Nazi Gold it would seem. Personally we just can’t believe this but it seems that “interested parties” turned to the New York Mafia for assistance (Project Triage). Allegedly the “Mob” had connections with the emerging South American (Columbian / Bolivian) drug cartels and a deal was struck whereby “State Authorities” (USCG) would ignore certain “cocaine” ships approaching Long Island in exchange for significant funds being deposited it Swiss bank accounts. (Please be critical of this section. We’ve taken what we could find and presented it here but we definitely have reservations regarding accuracy.) It seems that whatever was going on under Camp Hero it was costing a fortune and that even the drug money wasn’t enough. In 1961 the financing of the project was taken over by a major German technology company. You can find the name on other websites but legally we can’t name who it supposedly was. What happened to the team still located at Brookhaven over the following years is unknown but apparently a series of “breakthroughs” happened in 1965/6. As a result the entire project was relocated 54 miles further down the Island to the still remote area of Montauk and specifically to Camp Hero where the project could enter its fully operational phase. Apparently the project became so successful that it soon dominated the vast underground base. The use of the SAGE system was so effective that it often disrupted local TV and radio broadcasts requiring it to be shut down on several occasions and recalibrated. (Please note that if this really happened then it may have just been the normal use of the equipment.) Whether or not the “Montauk Project” ever really did take place is clearly very debatable but it does appear as if Camp Hero / Montauk Air force Base was state-of-the-art for the time. Many new systems were developed or tested there including magnetic memory for storage, light pens, keyboards, WANs (Wide Area Networks) and modular circuit packaging. It was also a major part of the NORAD defence system, so naturally security would have been strictly enforced. With the emergence of satellite technology the SAGE radar units quickly became obsolete and certainly the official operations of the base were shut down and decommissioned in July 1980. Supporters of the “Montauk Project” believe that this was just a cover-up to allow the “real” project to continue in greater secrecy. What has taken place there since then may represent some of the most dramatic breakthroughs in modern science or may be nothing more than the wild imaginings of conspiracy theorists and self publicists. The legend states that experiments were undertaken that involved time travel, aligning of parallel dimensions and even teleportation. Contact with aliens was established and their technology acquired. Experiments on abducted humans were carried out. New discoveries even allowed a time tunnel to be established with the original Philadelphia experiment and the crew of the USS Eldridge. Some of these people were transported alive from 1943 to 1983. One of the more dramatic achievements was the team’s ability to bring back animals and alien creatures. These were (and still are) apparently sent to the Animal Disease Centre on Plum Island for evaluation as possible bio-weapons or to ensure that they did not present a biohazard threat to the USA. Advanced alien technology was sent to the Brookhaven National Laboratory and it was this information that has been responsible for the facility achieving so much success over the years. (Naturally the personal dedication of so many brilliant scientists has nothing to do with these achievements!) Now if you believe all of this then you will probably believe anything but there are a few other points that should be considered as well. It is true that the BNL has had a remarkable number of successes over the years and has won at least six Nobel prizes for its work. It is true that TWA Flight 800 did explode and crash into the sea off the coast of Long Island in 1996 and that a conclusive reason for the disaster has never been fully agreed. It is true that Plum Island Animal Disease Centre is part of the Department of Homeland Security. It is also true that in July 2008 a story appeared on the internet and in the press about a strange creature that had washed up on Ditch Plains Beach on the 12th of July 2008.
The earliest source of the story was an article and photograph that appeared in a local newspaper “The Independent” on the 23rd of July 2008, under the title of “The Hound of the Bonacville” and was written by the news editor Kitty Merrill. (The Independent is published by The East Hampton Independent News Company Inc.) Everyone seems a little vague about what actually happened but it seems that a group of teenagers first spotted it and were joined by a group of other people. One of the teenagers (Hewitt) apparently used a friend’s camera to take the now famous pictures. The photo seems to have spread from person to person quite quickly and reached the possession of Los-Angeles based Alanna Navitski (who runs a viral marketing company) who then sent it on to Anna Holmes who runs a female interests website. Not exactly their sort of material, it was forwarded to another part of their group, the New York gossip website, “Gawker” who published it on the 29th of July 2008 under the heading “Dead Monster Washes Ashore in Montauk (Good Luck with your Hell Demons). Suddenly the Montauk Monster story was everywhere and everyone had an opinion on what the creature really was. For the conspiracy theorist it was proof that something strange was going on at Montauk or Plum Island. For the psychologists it was “hysteria” just before the Sub Prime Credit Crisis. Scientists claimed it was just a racoon with its upper jaw missing. Fox News even covered the story. Some news channels claimed it was a hoax designed to promote a new film “Splinterheads” that is (was) being filmed in the area. (There you go they’ve got some more publicity courtesy of Aquiziam. Just for the Hell of it don’t go and see the film.) This has subsequently been denied but even the denial is good publicity as well. We may never know what the creature was because – surprise, surprise – it has disappeared. There are several variations of the story but the one told by Alanna Navitski is that “"They say an old guy came and carted it away. He said, 'I'm going to mount it on my wall.” Others claim they still have skeleton and yet others say they know where it is. Who knows for sure!
So ... Is any of this real? The Montauk Mystery and Monster seems to have polarised public opinion. Many of people that know about these Montauk Mysteries have taken the position that it is all a complete load of nonsense from start to finish. Another group, significantly smaller in size, believe that every word is true. However, what they lack in size they certainly make up for in passion. So ... Is any of this real? Before we give you our opinion we encourage you to review the next two sections. SOME DISTURBING HISTORICAL FACTS “Something is only unbelievable until it happens then everyone says – we saw it coming!” Paul Vincent, British Author – 1964 – Commenting on the 2008 - 2010 world financial crisis.
History is littered with unbelievable secrets that turned out to be true. (Sometimes with catastrophic consequences.) We could genuinely fill many pages with conspiracies that were real and perhaps we will. However, for the purpose of this mystery we have included them to prove a point. Governments do have secrets! Conspiracies do exist. The trick is separating the fact from the fiction. Our point is that even the bizarre may conceal truth. “I don’t worry about the conspiracies that I hear about – I worry about the ones that I don’t and can only imagine!” Paul Vincent, British Author – 1964 Long Island, New York has a rich history of military and quasi-military activity. Some of the bases there include and have included:
THIS IS IMPORTANT: Almost all Nike Hercules missiles deployed during this period, in the USA, were armed with W-31 nuclear warheads with a variable yield of between 2.5 and 40 kilotons. During the 50’s and 60’s Long Island alone had enough nuclear firepower to destroy most of civilisation on this planet. Please don’t ever think that this area was not once a Level One strategic military zone. Actually, we have a suspicion that there were (are) at least 5 more bases that we have missed but for which we can’t find hard records. Still, it makes a point. (Source: The New York State Division of Military and Naval Affairs) and of course...
OUR CONCLUSIONS So ... Is any of this real? The safe and easy, but foolish, answer is to say no! Of course not! Are you a stupid conspiracy theorist? Any half-baked historian can easily find a hundred things wrong with the Legend of the Montauk Mystery and Monster. (Obsessive “debunking” is often as misleading as “Hoax creation”.) The harder (and less safe) answer is to admit ... who really knows? After all, there are very many components of the story that are verifiable. Plum Island Animal Disease Centre still exists, Fort Terry now part of PIADC was once a bio-weapons facility. The US did seem to have an obsession with military bases on Long Island. Camp Hero / Montauk Air Force Base was – for a time – a state-of-the-art top secret facility and part of the NORAD defence network. There were nuclear tipped missiles based in Westhampton that people did not know about and Brookhaven National Laboratories were once involved in all forms of nuclear and other innovative research. Electromagnetism was being used in warships during WWII. TWA flight 800 did mysteriously crash in 1996 and a strange creature did wash up at Ditch Plains Beach near Montauk in 2008. Unfortunately for proponents of the Montauk Project this is not conclusive proof. Still, as circumstantial evidence goes it is quite interesting. This is our assessment: A lot of secret activity has taken place in the region and probably still does. Many people have been aware that “something” has been going on and they have tried to “join up the dots” and create a single “myth” that explains it all. Self publicists, authors, conspiracy theorists and even genuine researchers have added to this mystery until it is near impossible to separate the fact from the fiction. Perhaps this is what makes it so compelling! Perhaps, just perhaps, this is intended. Do we believe the Montauk Mystery happened as the “internet myths and urban legends” say it did? The answer has to be no. (Please God we hope the answer is no or the World we live on just became more fragile than we can imagine.) Do we believe that there is still much about these military bases and government research facilities that we don’t know? The answer is naturally yes. Of course it is yes – some of the work they do is meant to be secret! What really happened? Truthfully, we don’t have a clue but it would be nice to know. There is a simple way to solve this mystery. A team of researchers needs to go and look. Has anyone actually asked the US Government / US Department of Homeland Security if they can go and seriously poke around the remains of Camp Hero? (It would make a great National Geographic TV programme) If they have asked then what answer did they receive? We would like to leave you with one last thought. If we were Top Secret US researchers, doing who knows what, we would definitely prefer you to be wondering about yesterdays “historical” projects rather than wondering about what we were doing now! Perhaps we should have been looking into other things altogether. Perhaps we should have been looking into where is Area 52 and what is Project Nadine FMI and the the "SRA 09 (?) Bio-Armour Concept". (We bet you won't find much about that on the Internet!) Perhaps we should be even be asking questions like, "What replaced Project Carnivore and has it analysed this page yet?" Threats evolve but so do the methods used to neutralise them. That's actually a good thing. Big brother may be watching you but, most of the time, he's probably taking care of you too. It's not what you know that matters, it's what you don't! |
